Field note /

Revisited

This began as a Facebook post on 18 April 2016, two days after the Notun Koira Shuru gathering in Mohakhali, Dhaka. It was the prelude to Biralpakhir Mojma, a monthly series that began on 21 May 2016 and ran to seventeen events.

The post ended by asking people to stay with us. I cut that line from this field note. The comments kept answering it. With you. Will stay. One person wrote it in three tenses: was, am, will be.

The post said the gathering would be ours. Several comments addressed me directly. Bhai. Sir. Keep holding the helm. One wrote that the teacher’s future was the students’ future. I had just left one title. The teacher’s role followed me.

Some explained their absence. An exam, an illness, a trip outside Dhaka. Others asked when the next call would come.

Many sent wishes or emoji: a thumbs up, a heart, a birthday cake. I read these small gestures as solidarity.

The venue was on the third floor, with no lift. One person wanted to attend but wrote that the third floor stopped him. He asked us to choose another venue next time. Our resources were limited, but I had not made accessibility a requirement. I regret it.
