Revisited§
I wrote this on 17 August 2018, two days after the national day of mourning. It was my first log after a year of silence. In those weeks, students had filled Dhaka’s roads demanding safe streets, and people were arrested for what they posted on Facebook. Mourning was political. Speech was policed. Cinema still paid through its side doors. Small agencies renewed their papers, queued at tenders or pitched behind closed doors. I was one of them, with a trade licence renewed for the purpose.
Tarkovsky sorted filmmakers into two kinds: those who imitate the world they live in, and the poets who create their own. He believed that “only the poets will go down in the history of cinema.” I had read Sculpting in Time with admiration. At a closed pitch that year, I waited with filmmakers who called their own work poetic in interviews and cited him. We had come for the same commission. Rereading him in 2026, I hold one more fact beside the quote. Tarkovsky made his films inside Goskino, the Soviet state cinema agency, and fought it for years.
This note rests on three sources: the dated post, the news of that week, and my memory of those rooms. The first two can be checked. The third cannot. I leave out the client and the names of the others who waited.
